My topic is air pollution in Illinois. The first article is Ryan Keith’s “Illinois Third in Nation for Neighborhood with Unhealthy Air” from the Associated Press State & Local Wire. The second one is that Ill Kevin Leahy’s “Environment should be Everyone’s Concern” from Northern Illinois University. The first article points out Illinois’ unhealthy air quality by ranking. And the author describes the air quality by a nurse’s nursing experiences of taking care of patients with respiratory problems and itchy eyes problems on campus in Illinois. Also, the first article is concerned about the Illinois’ highest risk neighborhoods with low air quality. The second one is talking about the effects of air pollution in Illinois by presenting statistics. And the author is emphasizing that factories are main problems of air pollution in Illinois, and the factories need to change their systems for new air quality standards. Therefore, I would like to talk about the seriousness and the effects of air pollution in Illinois.
My research questions are presented as follows: how serious Illinois’s air pollution is? what are the causes of air pollution in Illinois? what do we have to do for improve air quality from the cause of air pollution in Illinois? Let’s look at my summaries for understanding and finding details about air pollution in Illinois.
In my first article I summarize, “Illinois Third in Nation for Neighborhood with Unhealthy Air,” Ryan Keith, states that Illinois has the third unhealthiest air after Pennsylvania and Ohio in the United States because the Illinois’ health risk score face with long term air pollution by industrial factories. For example, According to Hinton, she is a nurse at William Harris Elementary, stating that 15% - 20% of students have asthma or allergy problems, and she believes that it happens because of nearby factories. In addition, the author shows that five Illinois neighborhoods belong to thirty riskiest nations. The author found interesting thing that both minorities and the poor population are high in Illinois’ neighbor hood. Today, Illinois still has high number compared to other states at the measure of air pollution. But Illinois’ air quality is getting better than before because of the strict rules such as leaf burning ban and shut down mills which against rules.
I am interested in this article because it explains about the Illinois’ air condition which is third unhealthiest air. And I was surprised when I read the fact that the 15% to 20% students of the William Harris Elementary school have asthma or allergy because the school is located nearby mills. Also, I think that we should set limits of the distance from the factories to the school. In the result, it is good article for understanding the long term view of Illinois air quality.
In the second article entitled, “Environment should be Everyone’s Concern,” Kevin Leahy introduces that air pollution is serious problem in Illinois. Because the air quality leads asthma, heart attack, lung cancer, short breathing, coughing, wheezing, and so on. Moreover, 1,700 Illinoisans died every year due to air pollution from Illinois’ mills. In past four year, the environmental priorities are missed. Because Bush administration did not emphasis on environmental protection, and they roll back some regulations which can protect our air. The study claims that it is a good time to execute a law called New Source Review which is technology to modernize control pollutants, even though the technology is expensive and needs a long time to develop. In addition, he says that we should not think about using power plants, which create pollutants, for our immediate profit for daily life.
The second article helps to understand the air quality in past four years. If I do not read this article, I might not get information about the Bush administration which affects air quality rules badly in past four years. Also, the article gives the information of diseases from air pollution. And this article urges the importance of air quality. So, I can emphasize the importance of the air quality in my town which is Illinois.
According to articles, the authors have a different view between the first article and the second article. In the first article, the author focuses on long term air quality. For example, he talks that Illinois has unhealthy air quality. But the air quality of Illinois is getting better while we start strict rules for 30 years. On the other hand, the second article focuses on short term air quality. For instance, Leahy only mentions that it was in a bad situation for air quality in past four year. Therefore, I learned that each articles has different views based on this issue. Also, in these articles, the statistics help me recognize some serious air quality problem in Illinois. As I mentioned previously, the number, 1,700 of people died every year in Illinois because of impact of air pollution. Both two articles show me their backgrounds, information, and importance of air quality protection.
In conclusion, I summarized two articles that are related to my research questions which are how serious Illinois’s air pollution is? what are the causes of air pollution in Illinois? and what do we have to do for improve air quality from the cause of air pollution in Illinois? Two articles are related each other on the base of the effect of air pollution in Illinois. Especially, we are able to notice that we have to do everything possible to protect the air quality in Illinois. We should avoid the problems get worse in order to improve air quality in Illinois.

Stress is contagious

In the article “Stress is contagious”, Cheryl Solimini states that second stress affect to person and also affect to feel unhappy to family harmony. It is big step which is recognizing affect to family. Nobody seems unhappy but second stress used to happen. According to Dr. Hamilton McCubbin, said that each member of family influenced by the by-products of stress. The author introduces that people may not recognize the other people’s stress because every people got different pressure. Adult stress can be recognized easily as snap, glitches, criticize, or eat too much better than children. According to Dr. Georgia Witkin, introduces that children wants to be alone, when they the have stress. And children daydream and can focus on their homework like male or female. When the children become a teenager, they may back away from family, exhibit school, or problem in social or become a combative. Dr. David Elkind states that a lot of 21 century parents are living with pressure, when they are doing everything. Moreover, when they are teaching their child. Also, Dr. Kathleen Gilbert said, do not afraid cut down for being a good parent. Also, he states that if you worry too much, you can not focusing right person to yourself and your children. The author said that if your stress is out of control, you can reduce the effect that influences family.
There are the ways. Arlen prince said that when you are anxiety, take a breaths deeply and reminder that your option and choose are appropriate. And when someone wants to be alone, just not talk at that time and talk when she or he wants to talk. Also, do not attack verbally and please the person feeling. In addition, Dr. McCubbin introduced that it can be good ways for deflect and relive stress that talk with kids, show your open mind, and use humor at good timing. And give comfort using hug, putting arm over the shoulder or sitting side by side. In the “be part of the solution, not the problem”, you do not disapprove if you can not have chance. You do not dwell on to do everything you love, if it may wrong. And do patience and understanding! Recognize realistic! Children are not same as you. Also, you do not have to perfect. Finally, if you need hands, ask your friend or family and get a little break.

Air pollution in Illinois

Do you think our atmosphere the air that is all around us is clear enough to inhale without any doubt? The answer is no. The atmosphere, which exists only on our planet, Earth, is polluted by lots of human activities. It is suffered more and more as the world develops. Although I have a little information which the air pollution is serious problem in our life, I was very surprise because of the contents of an article which show that Illinois, where I am breathing, has the third unhealthiest air after Pennsylvania and Ohio in the United States. Therefore, I choose this topic which is air pollution in Illinois. And I read ten sources about it because I am really interesting about my topic. Generally, the ingredients of air pollution in Illinois are particulate matter, ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and lead. And the pollutants lead to diseases such as asthma, heart attack and lung cancer. Ciproano (2002, p. ix) said that Chicago and St. Louis Metro East region has especially bad air quality. The ingredients of air pollution have been decreasing in Illinois from 1992 to 2001 (Ciproano, 2002, p. ix). On the other hand, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Director Cipriano testified that air pollution policies were not working well through 2003 to 2004 because the United States rolled back their “several provisions under the Clean Air Act, actually making it easier for old power plants to increase pollution and to avoid installing controls that would lower air pollution in Illinois” (2004, par.2). The author, Ryan Keith, states that the Illinois’ air is becoming better (2005, par.11).
To begin with, there are two main reasons that Illinois has a third unhealthiest air quality in the United States. First, the factories create unhealthy air quality to Illinois. According to Hinton, who is a nurse at William Harris Elementary, states that 15% - 20% student have asthma or allergy problem and she believes it happens because of nearby factories (2005, para. 13). One article (“Environment should be everyone’s concern,” 2005, para. 3) found that about 1,700 people lose their life annually in Illinois because of power plants which produce pollutants. Another study, Jo Napolitano, introduces that the plants are not only create benefiting but also create air pollution (2005, para.1) For instance, steel plants provide more than 2,000 job opportunities, but it creates dangerous “pollutants such as benzene, toluene, xylene and naphalene (Jadhav, 2005, para. 5 & 13)”. The other cause is motor vehicle because it makes main matters of air pollution such as carbon dioxide. One article (“Ethanol Facility will Significantly Reduce Emissions, Pay Civil Penalty,” 2005, para. 5) introduces carbon dioxide which is harmful because it decreases oxygen movement to organs and tissues of the body. Also, Smog is created by sunlight reacting with nitrofen oxides and hydrocarbons from vehicle emissions. Other article (“Clean Air Now,” 2005) noted that the smog is dangerous to young children and people with asthma and other respiratory complaints. In addition, Illinois’ risk neighborhoods affect to Illinois’ air quality badly. For example, Ryan Keith, states that five Illinois neighborhoods belong to thirty riskiest nations and “twelve were ranked in the top 100 nationwide, including two in Decatur and four in Granite City, near St. Louis” (2005, para. 5).
As I mentioned today Illinoisan are living with unhealthy air so the Government of the United States, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, Illinoisan, and Illinois neighborhoods should execute several ways to improving air. First, the Government of the United States should make strict rules and Environmental Protection Agency executes the rules constantly for our air quality by using punishment with a high fine. The government and Environmental Protection Agency tries to remember their fault, which is rolled back several provisions in 2003 to 2004, and should not make fault again. Also, if they make provisions with punishment and high fine such as one thousand dollar fine per one violate the provisions or close the factory which make over standard amount pollutants, people will not violate provisions. Second, we should research good technology and using it for our life. If we find renewable source of power and use the technology, we can reduce pollutants. Or If we add more control skill of pollutant, we can improve air quality. Finally, both Illinoisans and the neighborhoods, who live nearby Illinois, try to improve their air quality ourselves. For instance, if people try to use a public transportation or car pool system, we can reduce amount of pollutant. Also, if people get car emission test periodically, we will get improving air quality better than before.
I have found a book and a variety of articles that give background information about air pollution in Illinois. And then, I learn about the effect of air pollution and the problem of air quality in Illinois. I would like to focus how people can improve air quality by their own actions. Therefore, I will look for more information about the way which can improve air quality ourselves in Illinois.

Annotated Bibliography

Cipriano, R. (2001). Illinois Annual Air Quality Report 2001. If you answer "yes", you might be read magazine about luxury living. These magazines give information of high quality goods such as Jewelry, car, liquor and so on. I think that jewelry is the most important thing in women world. As jewelry can add elegance and dignity, women can look better. Therefore, I chose an article that titled "Vera Wang Fine Jewelry" from Saint Louis Seasons Magazine for Luxury Living.
As you realize from name of magazine, this magazine is targeting to people who live in Saint Louis area or near the Saint Louis area. Especially someone have an interest in luxury living. Moreover, this magazine has pictures about wedding, interior and jewelry and, this picture do not show young face. Accordingly I can guess that it aims at people who over 25 year olds. Also, many image of people put on formal dress in magazine hence it is targeting to people who has job. The magazine had a lot of pictures and it captivates reader. For example, even though my article is one page, it has 10 jewel images: there are earrings, rings and necklaces. In the article, the jewels sparkle. 10 jewels seem to sign to me to look at me and try me. As a result, I could not pass this article.
The article is about Vera Wang Fine Jewelry Collection in St. Louis. The article shows three kinds of strategy. First, the author used definition. In first title, the author defines Vera Wang Fine Jewelry as enthralls & Delights. Therefore, it shows what the image of jewelry is. Second, the author quotes sentiments from other people who attend this collection. For instance, a woman said that, “the colors of the gemstones are so soft…these bows are really beautiful and wearable…everything in her collection is so feminine and delicate…her jewelry is very dramatic.” Third, the author use cause and effect in this article. In the case of cause and effect, the author mentions that why the designer, who is Wang, start design. According to the article, she could not find appropriate her style jewel when she had wedding. So this case made starting business to her.
Consequently, while I try to write sixth journal, I had new an experience in the article of magazine that I never had. First, I considered the magazine’s target. Second I analyze a magazine’s attractiveness. Finally, I have many thinking about using strategies in the article. As a result, when I look at magazines in the store, preferentially I think about the target of magazines and I think about the attractiveness of magazine. Besides, if I read an article, I will think about strategies.

My Favorite novel

My favorite novel is Catch Me If You Can and it is written by Frank. Abagnale, Jr. and Stan Redding. It was my first English novel which I read while I studied in CESL (Center for English as a Second Language). The first time I saw the novel, I was familiar with it. Because I used to see the movie before. I remember that I had hard time to read. Because I could not understand the detail exactly so I often confused with the content. Therefore, I read again and again. In addition, my classmates and I usually had examination about the novel in my CESL class. Therefore, I had to understand about it to answer questions in the examination. For this reason, now I understand well about the novel. I will recommend that other people to read this charming book. Then, I am going to talk about my favorite novel.
It is based on a true story; the novel relates the story of Frank. Abagnale, Jr. He was a very famous criminal of fake check. According to the novel, he passed $2,500,000 fake check and he was wanted by the police of 26 countries. He had everything he wanted through the check. He started a crime when he was 16 because he run away from home and he needed money. Before he was 21 year olds, he controlled several Pan Am American airplanes as a copilot, and worked in hospital as a superintendent of resident. He also pretended to be a lawyer under a legal officer as the alumnus of Harvard. Moreover, he taught sociology to students in a university. While he wandered from place to place, he gave currency to fake check. Even though he was young, he was mature. So, he could disguise as copilot, superintendent, lawyer, and professor. Also, when I read the book, I know that he was clever. In the novel, he stated that “I took the examination and passed! I received a handsome certificate attesting to fact that I had been admitted to the state bar and was licensed to practice law…I hadn’t even finished high school and had yet to step on a college campus, but I was a certified lawyer!”. Anyway, he was arrested in France and he was tried, then he was imprisoned. He said that “there was no light switch…no bed, no toilet, no wash basin, no drain, nothing.” So, I could feel how pain he had in the prison. When he was in prison in France, other countries also want to extradite Frank, because of crimes he did in each country. Besides he was held by several countries prison. Fortunately, when staying in Sweden prison, someone helped him and he could go back to his country. After that, he served in FBI thanks to the skill of dividing between fake check and original one.
I learn that if someone commits a crime, the person will have an equivalent some day. As you know, after Frank committed a crime, he subsequently had painful experience in prison, especially, in France. To illustrate, I do not want to commit a crime. It is very interesting to see how the story is developed. And it has specific story better than the movie. Lastly I encourage that people to read this novel, even if some of people already knew this story from the movie.

The Failed Experience

A lot of people have experiences about failure and success while they live. The successful experience is something that you do or that happens to you from the achievement of something which you have been trying to do in your life. On the other hand, the failed experience is something that something important that affects you from a lack of success in doing or achieving something. As “every failure is a stepping stone to success,” so we usually learn more from our failures than our do from successes. Therefore, the unsuccessful experience is very important in our life. Then, I would like talk about my unsuccessful experience of hair coloring.
My unsuccessful hair dyeing story was started in first year in my high school life. In Korea, all high school has several regulations that the students have to keep. One of regulation is that students can not dye their hair brightly. At that time, I and my peers had to keep our hair in black. But, the situation of vacation was different because we were not interfered with this rule. And, a lot of high students wanted to dye their hair brightly in vacation. There were some reasons to dye their hair. The main reasons were that many students wanted to be a look like lady not high school student and, wanted to be a person of marked individuality. I and my best friend, who is Na-hyang, had also same reasons to dye our hair in summer vacation. And we decided to go to a hair shop. After we dyed our hairs, we like our hairs so much at that time. But, the end of summer vacation, we had to dye hair in black because of rule. Therefore, we bought a thing that could make our hair color in black. Then, we using it to change our hair color to black ourselves. It was perfect! But I and my friend faced with a problem in winter. In winter vacation, we tried hair coloring again however the result was terrible because I got two hair colors in my hair: the lighted brown of a quarter and black of three quarters. My friend also got two hair colors. We look like a stupid twin. It was the reason that the black hair could not be removed in my hair while the new grown hair was dyed. I and my friend really needed help in those days. And, we made a decision which is going hair shop to fix hair. After we communicated with hairdresser and fixed our hair, we realized that if someone wanted to change their hair color after coloring black, the person had to decolorize the part of black. Thereafter, my friend and I could dye satisfactorily with using this know-how.
In conclusion, if I always got successful result in hair coloring, I could not learn about the know-how of hair coloring. As you know, the unsuccessful result was helped more than successful result. And, in my life, the failure of coloring was an important thing because I learned the knack of hair coloring and I got pretty hair color. Also, I believe that the know-how will help hair coloring style of my future. Moreover, it will help my friends’ hair color beauty with the know-how. In addition, if someone have same hair dyeing problem like me, I will recommend a consultation with a hairdresser.

Have you ever wanted something so badly that you would do anything to get it?

Have you ever desire to get anything? I’m sure a lot of people wish to get something when people are living. Sometimes, they would do anything to get it badly. As “avarice knows no bounds,” some of people do bad acts to get something again and again like they did before. I also had experience when I was a high school student in Korea. Therefore, I would like talk about my experience which I attained something, which I wished, badly over and over again.
I believe that my motive of shameful behavior was started by a typical Korea society trend. In Korea, the study of English is very important and necessary. Especially, we have to study English in high school because we have English subject each year and we have several English exams such as SAT, for which is entering college, and TOEFL, for which go studying abroad after graduate high school. For the reason, my English teacher started to give vocabulary tests to me and peers in school hours. So, we should memorize thirty words for two days. Also, we had to take a vocabulary exam for teen minutes. I knew it is for helping our English skill but I disliked doing this three times per a week.
So, I started to cheat my first vocabulary exams because I did not want to get bad score in this exam. Before took the vocabulary exams I written vocabulary on my table. When I took the exam, I saw my hand writing, which was vocabulary of the day, with care. Then, I easily got good score in the exams. Also, I was happy because of good score. And, I cheated again and again in several vocabulary exams for one month. After one month I got a serious problem because the teacher wanted to take review test. It meant that I had to study a month of vocabulary for taking review exam because I could not write down a lot of words on the desk. At that time, it was really hard to me that memorized about three hundreds words in all night. During the exam, I was so tired because of sitting up all night. After this review exam, I was not doing very well at my exam. So, I did not try to cheat in vocabulary exam because I ever wanted this kind of experience. Moreover, these vocabularies easily disappeared on my head.
According to my experience, I realized that if someone attained something badly, the person would lose an equivalent and more things. In my case, I got good score at first several times by using cheat. But, I lost my time that used for memorizing a lot of words. Also, I lost my condition because of all night vocabulary study.

Why Animals Deserve Legal Rights

In the article entitled “Why animals deserve legal rights”, Steven M. Wise states that having rights is important because it shows importance of existence. And the law distinguishes animals from people: law supposes that animals do not have rights but people have. He believes that now is time that all animals should have rights.
The author use illustration to support his main idea which all animals should have their rights. First of all, he used professional statistics. For example, “According to statistics collected annually by the Department of Agriculture in the United States, tens of millions of animals are likely to be killed during biomedical research…. ( Wise p.131-132)” In accordance with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and allies, hundreds of millions of animal will be killed by hunters or utilized for circuses, rodeos, and wayside zoos ( Wise p.132). Therefore, his opinion can have authentic and it made the reader imagine that many animals are in pain. Second, the author quotes scholars’ points to support his claim. For instance, the Roman jurist Hermongenianus said “All law was established for men’s sake.” As the author quotes the point, he shows that the law is injustice to nonhumans. Third, he criticizes the point for using his examples after Wise explains the legal thinker view that the right is controlled by autonomy ( Wise p.132). First, people always do not act with autonomy ( Wise p.132). Second, some animal has emotion or can understand effect and cause like humans ( Wise p.132-133). Finally, mute people cannot speak like nonhumans but they have rights ( Wise p.133).
I strongly agree to the main idea of the article because I believe that all living things are important, and so are all nonhuman animals. My point is that animals without legal rights have to be treated with care because they have rights to live their own lives as living things. On the other hand, I disagree with some authors’ views.
To begin with, the author’s arguments reflect that his views are very conclusive. Wise says “the law ignores all nonhuman animals unless a person decides to do something to them, and then, in most cases, nothing can be done to help them ( Wise p.131).” Both the sentence and the quotation of the Roman jurist Hermongenianus, which as mentioned earlier in the article, posts all humans indifferent to all animals and it makes humans as egoists who make laws only to their profit; however, some people try to help them continually. For example, some veterinary surgeon treats animals that had pain for free. Also, some people object to experiments with using animals for animals’ rights. Also, animals are helped and protected by laws and rules and it is the current of the times. Our society has law that protects a rare variety. If people run counter to the law, they will get punishment such as a fine and/or penal servitude. And zoo has rule which spectators do not touch windowpanes when animals are within windowpanes.
His general thinking can pose a question. Do you think all animals deserve legal rights which is the authors’ general thinking in the article? I do not think so. Because I think that some of animals do not deserve their rights. For instance, rare variety animals have their legal rights in the laws and the laws makes that people can not touch the animals’ life to protect rights of rare variety animals. Also some pets are satisfied with care of human. Because some pet are in good surroundings within enough food and easy life. If pets deserve their rights, the pet will refuse their life and run away from their owner but they do not. It has over one percent possibility which all animals do not deserve legal rights.
Finally, I can not accept the authors’ one point of view which mute people cannot speak like nonhumans but they have rights so nonhumans should have rights ( p.133). In this opinion, mute people and animals are treated equally. But both mute people and animals are not equal even though they has appoint of sameness. Both mute people can not speak language as animals however mute people are higher than animal in intelligence quotient part. Even though chimpanzees have higher IQ than other animals, chimpanzees do not have calculation ability, but mute people have ability of calculation. For example, when someone dropped white zero two papers to chimpanzee, the chimpanzee hold white ball which has the language of 2 numbers from in 1 and 2. It seems that chimpanzee but it is just visual training that pick white ball. Because when someone changed the color of white ball, the chimpanzee very confused and pick the wrong thing.
In conclusion, I have same thinking about main point which is the authors’ thesis. But I disagree with a point which a conclusive expression of using word ‘all animal’. Therefore, I claim that animals without legal rights have to be treated with care because they have rights to live their own lives as living things. Also, I disagree with a conclusive view which is people do not care animals, and an inequality view between mute people and animals.

Reference
Wise, S.M. Have you ever heard that “The difficulty in life is the choice?” This sentence expresses that all choices are difficult because choices decide all happenings. The good choices give good things. On the other hand, the bad selections give bad things. Sometimes, bad things turned out to be good things in accordance with good choices. Therefore, I would like to talk about my latest experience in which a bad thing turned out to be good results with my good decision.
First, one decision gives me different life style in summer. When I came to the U.S, it was summer. And I remember that the last summer season is horrible in the U.S. At that time, I did not know about Carbondale and I did not have friend who play something or go somewhere with me. So, I spent almost all the time in my home with television. I was bored in this life style. And I often thought that I was wasting my time. Therefore, I do not want to spend time like last summer ever. This year, I finished my CESL (Center for English as a Second Language) program in summer. Although many students wanted to enter university in fall or spring semester, I decided to start my university life from the summer semester because I really wanted a change in my life style. Moreover, when I attended CESL, I was always envious of the SIUC student life and I really wanted to learn fashion design as soon as possible. When I attended my beginning of the summer semester in University, I felt lonely. The reason for loneliness is that most of my Korean and international friends went back to their country during summer break. It meant that I was not able to enjoy shopping, and would have no more parties with my friends. And, the other reason was that my brother went back to Korea. It implied that staying home would be too lonely for me. Moreover, my boyfriend went back to Korea. So, I could not enjoy dating with my boyfriend and I could not go to anyplace with his car. In addition, we know that most of SIUC students leave Carbondale during summer vacation. Therefore, the summer semester in Carbondale is somewhat quieter than spring or fall semester. As I hate doing something alone, I did not know how to maintain summer life at first.
In the middle of my summer semester, it was not like what beginning of summer used to be. While I took the fashion illustration class, I made some friends whose names are Yuko and Vicky. Yuko was a transfer student from Japan and she has been living in Carbondale for 2years. Also, she is a good speaker of English. And then, she likes watching horror movies. So, Yuko and I went to a movie theater, located inside of University Mall, when the movie theater played a horror movie during summer semester. Sometimes, we enjoyed talking with each other in my house while eating foods. One of my classmates Vicky is from China but her family has been living in Champagne since she entered a high school. Also, her hobby is shopping. So, I went to University Mall with Vicky for shopping and we sometimes felt tired from walking long time. Therefore, we used to take a rest at the coffee store in University Mall. They were very fun days with Yuko and Vicky.

Another decision I made was exercise. And it gave me energy again. In the summer vacation, I started exercising in the recreation center. I am always thinking about doing exercise. But, I was hesitating as to whether I should undertake it or not at first. The reason was that it took about thirty minutes for me to go to the recreation center by walking from my house. Moreover, the bus scheduled time was not accurate everyday. Eventually, I decided to go to the recreation center because I wanted to lose my weight. At that time, I gained about 10 pounds and I hated my body shape and condition. Therefore, I felt I had to do something for losing my weight. And, I thought that it was very good time to do exercise with my own life. I planned to do exercise for two hours: one hour is for running and another hour is for swimming. Even if it was hard to do that for two hours, I always followed a fixed plan. As a result, I lost six pounds during summer break. And I have been finding my health to be better.
In conclusion, I had two choices. One was starting school from summer instead of starting from fall semester and another was to start to do exercise. According to my choices, you can notice that the beginning of my summer life seemed to be bad but it was changed to be good. In the future, I will try to make good decisions.

Air Pollution in Russia

Abstract

I made a decision to write research paper from the topic of air pollution in Russia. The air quality of Russia is a very serious problem. So, this paper argues about three things. The first one is that the air pollution at Russia is very serious. The second one is that Russian should make some policy and incremental solutions. The third one is that we should realize the importance of protecting the air. In conclusion, a lot of people get sick from air, and the government and Russian should execute several ways to improve air.

Today, Russian air pollution is a serious pollution. The motive for choosing this topic is that when I was a teenager, I visited Russia one time. It was my first a foreign travel. So, I am interested in all things about Russia more than any other country. At that time, I experience Russian air directly and I sometimes see hazy sky. Russia is an important place in the ecosystem because Russia has plentiful natural resources. Russia inherited environmental problems from the Soviet Union. According to the DOE website, the Soviet Union’s “economy is dependent on a military- industrial complex that is high energy-intensive” (http://www.eia.doe.gov/, 2004, par.2). Today, awareness of the environment grows in Russia. The author said, on March 11, 1999, Russia signed the Kyoto Protocol that is mandates for reducing greenhouse gases (2004, par.20). But Russia is one of the nations that have low quality air more than other place. According to the DOE website (2004), when the USSR demises Russia, carbon dioxide emission was 573.5 million tons (2004, par.18). Also, the author introduces that carbon dioxide emission had gone down to 394.7 million ton in 1997 (2004, par.18). Although the amount of carbon dioxide decrease 31% in five years, Russia still ranks the highest carbon dioxide emitting countries (2004, par.19). There are a lot of causes done by a lot of people in Russia. According to Mr. Gavrilov states that actually, 80~90% industrial companies do not have ecological programs. The other cause is Motor vehicle because it makes main matters of air pollution such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide. In addition, smog is caused by forest fires. Moreover, according to Ivan Volgyes, 10% of air pollution stems from refuse disposal and domestic heating in Western Europe (1974, p.13). Today, a lot of people get sick from air, and the government and Russian should execute several ways to improve air. I plan on writing that three things should be done about the causes of air pollution in Russia.
First, Russian should have new environmental rule and standards. The worst problem of Russia is the public and business cannot see the environment protection system, low industrial pollution fines and most companies do not rate their environmental standing. Therefore, Russia government should make high industrial pollution fines. According to the RIV Novosti, Mr. Gavrilov said that “Industrial pollution fines for ton of prussic acid currently make 205 rubles, and for a ton of potassium cyanide, 5,500 rubles (today’s Central Bank rate is R27.88/$1) (http://web.lexis-nexis.com, 2004, par. 4). The situation made that people do not care toxic waste that can affect air. For example, If the pollution fines is R27.88/$1000, many plants would be afraid the fine. And they try to set up equipments that can reduce bad things that can affect air. Also, when people recognize high fine, people realize the importance of air in this situation. And, Russian government tries to make a lot of cleaner companies using repetitive evaluation in Russian industry because the evaluations of repeat promote air quality. For example, if government does repetitive evaluation about smoke, plants try to make less emit smoke. So, Russian has better air quality than before. In addition, if Russia shows ratings publicly to attract foreign investment, Russian plants will have a lot of investors that is profitable economically.
Second, the government should make policy for reducing automobile’s use. Air pollution is getting worse in main cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg because of motor vehicle. According to Irina Titova, in spite of the industry is decreasing, air pollution has increase about 50% for ten years (2003, par.2). And author mentions that the nitrogen dioxide is 79 percent upper the allow level in main city. Also, author states that “Between 2001 and 2002 the concentration of carbon monoxide in the cities in the European part of Russia more than doubled” (2003, par.9). And these results affect human health. According to the Irina Titova, the number of adults with vascular and heart diseases are risen about 10~15% for 5 years in St. Petersburg (2003, par.4). Also, author states that the rate, which the number of children with vascular defects and congenital heart, increase about 10~15% in St. Petersburg (2003, par. 4). Therefore, Russia needs emission testing and odd/even day driving bans for reducing car. In Korea, every person, who have car, have to a emission test. So, My father usually checks degree of car’s pollutant. When a technical expert found over average pollutant in his car, my father has to change an exhaust system. Therefore, if government makes policy that is performance of a duty of emission car test, a lot of car will have low pollutant than before because of a periodical inspection. And Russia will reduce the main material that affects air badly. Also, my country execute the policy that is odd/even day driving. When many Korean try to obey the policy in Seoul, Seoul could reduce degree of air pollution. Moreover, Seoul could solve a little traffic jam. If government recommends odd/even day driving bans in Russia as Korea, the number of using car will decline in the center city and Russia’s carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide will decrease. Finally, Russian will have good quality air.
Third, government and the public should recognize a possibility of danger forest fire to air condition, and people should not try to make forest fire. Moscow’s worst smog is serious problems. According to the CNN website, “There are five large blazes and 188 smaller fires in the region surrounding Moscow – many of them below ground in smoldering peat bogs – and almost 900 fires, including 200 large ones burning across western Russia” (http://archives.cnn.com, 2002, par. 16). Also, the author introduces that everybody chokes with thick smoke from forest fire (2002, par. 2, 12). The main cause of smog is forest fire in Russia. Fires and cigarettes cause Forest fire. So, we can know the effect of fire. Today, Moscow step up to against smog however, the government has lack of action. Therefore, government makes law that makes illegality of cigarettes in forest because the law will save our life and a lot of resources in Russia. Many people usually drop their cigarettes everywhere. If government makes smoking prohibit area nearby and in forest as high punishment such as a sentence of 1years, people do not smoke again and do not throw away cigarettes in forest area. Moreover people careful with small fire because small fire does continue big fire that harms forest ecosystem and human health. If people realize small fire quickly, we can put out a fire immediately and we can prevent an enormous loss of resources in Russia forest.
In conclusion, Russian air pollution is very serious. Therefore, Russian should have new environmental rule and standards. And the government should make policy for reducing automobile’s use. Also, government and the public should recognize a possibility of danger forest fire to air condition, and people should not try to make forest fire. So, We should strive improving air condition in Russia using these ways. If the air quality is getting dirty in Russia, the air condition will affect nearby countries and all living things and then people will have a lot of problem from this situation.

BIBLIOGRAPHY
For a Book-
Ivan Volgyes. SIUC also has a smoking policy that includes a ban of smoking within twenty-five feet of every doorway and in residence, and a ban on selling cigarettes in the Student Center. Also, faculty are not allowed to smoke in personal offices, because SIUC wants to promote the health of the university community and a clean and safe environment. But it is not working well. For example, entrances still have a lot of ashtrays. Therefore, people still smoke in front of entrances. When people pass the entrance, people experience secondhand smoke. Also, when people open a door, the smoke enters the inside. And the smoke makes indoor air pollution. As a result, SIUC needs a stronger policy such as a high fine, removal of ashtray, and education about bad effect of smoking.
I interviewed a some-time smoker who smokes one time per month. And, he is an American SIUC student and hates indoor smokers. He knows about the SIUC smoking policy well. He does disagree with the SIUC policy because it violates civil liberties, but he likes it because he hates indoor smokers. He said that the policy cannot reduce the number of smokers. But, he wishes they did. He also told of his experience that, "When I walk to class sometime I am behind a smoker, I receive second hand smoke and it bothers me". In addition, he said that the policy leads to a loss of income in the Student Center, but that money should be reinvested into student-related programs because generally it is the students who buy the cigarettes. And he states that SIU should be more concerned with student-related problems, such as the library not being as accessible as cigarette trash used to be. If it is such a problem then let SIU try to get the major tobacco companies to pay for it in a give and take relationship. Finally, he recommends the good way which is showing the students that smoking is not at all good for you or your health.

By Ri-Na

How Foreign Students Contribute to Their American Communities

Today, many foreign students study in the United States and they give a lot of benefits economically and culturally to the United States. In America, when baby boom generation shifts toward middle age, American enrollments of collage and university are decreasing. And the space of enrollments filled by foreign students. It shows that foreign students contribute to the America economically. Also, foreign students give opportunities that can experience cultural diversity and cultural exchanges.
To begin with, a lot foreign students contribute in economy and culture to their American communities. According to the Howard, “Foreign student enrollment is seen by many administrators as a way to maintain college and university enrollments and the state money that comes with these enrollment” (1984, p. 200-215). Also, Ley states “If we assume that 300,000 foreign students spend $10,000 per year in the United States, we can see that 3 billion dollars are contributed annually to the American economy through international education” (1984, p. 33, 25-39). In side view of culture, Deaver mentions that, “Last year at Southern Illinois University and the University of Wisconsin, schools with large international festivals and cross-cultural meetings were regularly held (1980, p. 5, 120-129).
I think that foreign students add to economical and cultural benefits to American communities. So, a lot of American college and University should try to think about the way of security of foreign students such as increasing scholarship and useful equipments for foreign students. And they should give opportunities that are cross-cultural meetings and festivals steadily.

A Family Plan

In the book entitled “A Family Plan”, Lloyd Garrison states that the birth rate is 4.7 children per a couple in Singapore in 1965 (para 2). So, the government of Singapore tried to reduce population using policies that are legalizing abortion, cutting health benefits because they afraid that explosive population (para 2&3). In these situations, the birth rate began to go down into 1.6 children per a couple (para 2). In the result, Singapore has problem that is less economic growth and productivity. Today, they try to increase population. Mr. Garrison said that “A third child now qualifies parents for a $9,300 rebate that can be applied toward future taxes, and working mother can get an additional rebate of 15% of her earning” (para 4). Also, they practice policies a kind of dating service (para 4).
A family plan is controversial because the government of Singapore seems to focus on Chinese who make up most population. According to the author, “In 1980, 74% of all third births were Chinese, 18% Malay and 8% Indian and others however only 69% of third births were Chinese, while those of Malay all staged gain and others moved to 10%” (para 5). Therefore, this situation looks like a racial problem. Because the third birth rate of Singapore is increasing except for the third birth rate of Chinese.
In Singapore, Chinese, Malay, Indian and others make up population. Especially, Chinese makes up most population. So, if Chinese will increase more and more in population with family plan, other people will lose their position in society. For example, if all Chinese people work in a company, the company does not select Malay, Indian or others because the president of company does not want to appear racial problem in the company. Also, if Chinese increase in Singapore because of family plan, Malay, Indian and others culture is going to disappear. Because if one culture is bigger and bigger and than the culture of small people will be combine. In this sentence, US national flower means that is road. Therefore, it means that US road should be concrete shape of cloverleaf. Because US people love car so much and they need car because of feature of area. Also, cars are symbols of excitement, sex, power and success to American. In the result they need more roads. So, US should be concrete road that shapes cloverleaf.
In the US, Urban sprawl is serious problem and people can experience wide-city in Chicago, LA, Las Vegas and so on. Urban sprawl means that is spreading out of cities. The reason of urban sprawl is a network of highways, cheap gasoline, abundant land, and the expensive cost of urban. The problems of urban sprawl are pollution because people need more cars and roads. Also, people lost farmlands because of spread urban.
Environmentalists are worried about use of increasing car because this situation leads to out of resource, air pollution, and destruction of environment. For example, if people use many cars, use of oil will increase. And then, people will face out of oil. Also, during people use cars, cars shoot out carbon dioxide that is main problem of air pollution. The situation make that people gain diseases from air pollution. In addition, when people use car, they also need road. Therefore, if people want to use more cars, we should make more roads. The construction of roads leads to destruction of environment because when people construct roads, people need a lot land for construction of roads. So, Environmentalists are worried these results such as out of resource, air pollution, and destruction of environment.

Air Pollution in Russia-Summary Response

In the article entitled “Russia: Environmental Issues”, the DOE website, the author introduces that Russia is an important place in ecosystem because Russia has plentiful natural resources. Russia inherited environmental problems from Soviet Union. The author states that “Russia’s economy dependent on a military-industrial complex that is highly energy-intensive” (http://www.eia.doe.gov/, 2004, par.2). Therefore, Russia government has considered about economic growth more than protection of environment for 10years ago. Now, awareness of environment grows in Russia but air quality of Russia remains low. Air pollution is an important problem in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and some cities. The one cause of air pollution is Russia’s factories of aging and lack of equipments that can control pollution. Also, other cause is Motor vehicles because it makes main matters of air pollution such as “carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides” (par.6).
To begin with, air pollution of Russia is serious problem because there is important part in world of biological balance. Although Russia has a lot of resources, Russia do not protect well because most plants of aging and lack of modern equipments for control of air pollution. Therefore, these situations make hard to repair or clean up damage of environment.
There are solutions that Russia should make a lot of modern equipments, and the governments of Russia should know about importance of environmental protection. If Russia develops useful equipments, Russian can live good air condition and do not get diseases such as asthma. Also, if Russia government makes laws that consider about both environmental protection and economic growth, Russia will have good environment and good economic growth.
Consequently, Russia should try to invent good equipments for air environment, and make law for improving air quality because Russia’s air quality is below rather than US and Europe. In addition, Russia is important place that has a lot of resources. Therefore people should protect Russia environment.
Russia: Environmental Issues
By Rina

HOW TO SAVE THE SEA TURTLES IN FLORIDA (Final Draft)

Abstract

I made a decision to write a research paper about the topic of sea turtles in Florida. The decline of the number of sea turtles is a very serious problem in Florida. And, the causes of decreasing the sea turtles’ number are environment problems and humans. So, this paper discusses three solutions. The first one is that many biologists have to search for the causes and then try to find right solution. The second one is that commercials and policies should be made by the government. The third one is that the public tries to make a good environment for sea turtles. In conclusion, a lot of living things are becoming insuperability so the government, biologists, and the public should execute the solution quickly.

When I was a teenager, I had an attachment to sea turtles more than any other kinds of animals after I saw a documentary about sea turtles on TV. Then, I choose this topic about sea turtles in writing class and I read several articles and books about it. Nowadays, a lot of creatures are in danger of extinction and sea turtles are also no exception. Then, this situation is more serious and worse than before. According to Bayles, the number of turtle’s nest is decreasing between 36 percent and 38 percent in the USA every year (2004, par.11&12). In addition, Seabrook states that Loggerhead sea turtles are the only sea turtle species to make nests regularly (2004, par.5). And Loggerhead sea turtles have been making 1,000 nests since 1989, but Loggerhead sea turtles had only 346 nests in April in 2004 at the Georgia beaches (Seabrook, 2004, par.2&3).. Furthermore, Mr. Seabrook mentions that “ Biologists in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Alabama-even in the Caribbean- also report dismally low number of nesting loggerheads” (2004, par.4). Especially, I learned that Florida is the home to several endangered animal species in my writing class. According to Broward website (www.co.broward.fl.us), the Florida is an important place to live for sea turtles because the sea turtles nest on the beach from April to September annually. Also, the loggerhead one is the most sea turtle using the part of place for nesting in Florida. In addition, sea turtles are protected ‘by the United States Endangered Species Act of 1973’ in Florida Statues (www.co.broward.fl.us). Furthermore, the Broward website mentions, these laws state that: “No person may take, harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, trap, capture or attempt to engage in any such conduct to marine turtles, turtle nests, and/or turtle eggs” (www.co.broward.fl.us).
Even though people translate the law into action, the number of sea turtles is decreasing every year. For example, when people are at the beach, they throw away a lot of trash. Therefore, the sea turtles are still in dangerous situation in many ways. Most people like to go to the beach because they like to relax at the beach. Moreover, Florida is the famous place as a rest area to a lot of people. So, this fact threatens the living of the sea turtles in Florida. There are two kinds of causes in the decline of turtles. These are natural causes and unnatural causes by people. In fact, John E. Burris said, “A natural cause of decreasing of the sea turtle is predation, parasitism, diseases, and environmental changes etc” (1990, p.13). For example, Bayles mentions that half of ‘sea turtle nests’ were destroyed by summer hurricanes in Florida in 2004. Therefore, today we can not see a lot of sea turtles easier than former days in Florida. There are, however, also other causes such as the quality of the water, tide embankment, ‘other man-made structures’, fishermen killing them carelessly, and people stealing their eggs from their nests (Bayles, 2004). For example, people construct building in the sea. Also, people eat turtles. For these reasons there are no longer homes for the turtles. We are usually living without realizing the importance of ecology. I plan on writing that is several ways to help sea turtles in Florida.
First, biologists have to search the cause that is decrease of sea turtles and they try to find a solution. According to the Bayles, Scientists do not know the cause but they suspect man-made problems (2004¸ par.5). Therefore, they try to find main cause about decrease of the number of sea turtles. Also, biologists should worry about the problem of extermination. If the ecosystem is destroyed, people will have lots of troubles from this. When I read the book entitled ‘Decline of the sea turtles causes and prevention’, I learned about the hatching of sea turtle. According to John E. Burris, during female turtles used to hatch ‘about 100eggs per clutch’, about 85% eggs are undisturbed and most hatchlings die in their first year in all probability (1990, p4). What should biologists do about the increase of sea turtles? Biologists should try to find the way that a lot of young turtles increase a survival rate to get out of the crisis of extermination.
Second, it should be make that is several advertisements and strong polices for cognition of the important of sea turtles to people by government. The blindness to the importance of the ecosystem effects the extermination of many species such as sea turtles, manatee and crocodile in Florida. So, I think that government should make several advertisements and strong polices which can perceive the importance of sea turtles. According to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune (Florida), “The Sarasota Country Commission is considering a small but necessary step: revising its turtle-protection ordinance to require that, nightly during the May-to-November nesting season, obstructions such as chair, benches and sailboats be removed from the beaches” (2004, par.8). And, I think that it is time to practice the ordinance well. In addition, government should make several commercials on TV and radio for sea turtles and other wildlife because TV and radio have a great effect. If people see a commercial about the importance of the sea turtles’ nest, they will act carefully on the beach in Florida. Because, they realize that is the importance of protecting sea turtles’ nest when people see the commercial. Also, if government makes a commercial that it is bad behavior eating the eggs of turtles and turtles to ecosystem, they will not eat the turtles and the turtles’ eggs anymore. Therefore, we can protect sea turtles by the several commercials and polices in Florida and other area.
Third, the public tries to make a lot of seas clean and they try to make a sheltered housing for good environment to sea turtles. The good quality of the water and clean beach is important thing to sea turtles because they live with sea and beach. In my opinion, the quality of water and beach can affect the condition of our health to use sea and beach. I think that protecting all living things health is the first way to live a comfortable life. As times passes, many living things are in danger are listed under the Endangered Species Act. And I heard that a lot of organisms are being exterminated quickly every year. Therefore, I think that we try to make good surroundings to sea turtles. According to Broward website, it mentions that sea turtles have bad effect on hatching when people illuminate bright lights at the beach. So I think that if people don’t make bright lights artificially, sea turtles will not have problems on hatching. And then, the number of turtles is going to increase more than before. Also, if people make several sanctuaries for sea turtles on the beaches, the seaside environment will return to the original state nearly. And sea turtles will escape from a dangerous situation.
In conclusion, I argued that there are two causes for the state of sea the turtles are natural causes by environment and man-made causes. After I know that the serious causes that are decreasing number of sea turtles in Florida, the three kinds of people, that are the government, biologists, and the public, try to think how they can help sea turtles in Florida such as studying about cause, using commercials and polices, making several sanctuaries for sea turtles, and offering good environment. In addition, it is important that is an offer of information about importance of all living things and recognition about the importance of all creatures to people. If the sea turtle are extermination, food chain will be destroyed. And, the results appear in the ecosystem badly. And then, we can not live our lives as before. This situation will become insuperable so the government, biologists, and the public should execute the solution quickly.

HOW TO SAVE THE SEA TURTLES IN FLORIDA

Abstract

I mad a decision to write research paper from the topic of sea turtles in Florida. Tyler Miller, economic growth means an rise in their ability to offer ‘goods and services for people’s final use’. Also I think that poverty is the state of being poor and saving environment is that try to help environment. We look at the link between poverty, economy growth, and saving the environment. In addition, I think that poverty and economic growth are in inverse proportion to each other and poverty and saving the environment are in inverse proportion to each other. While on the other, economic growth and saving the environment are proportioned. Therefore the more develop countries have and reduce poverty. In addition, the more develop countries save environment, while good economic growth because they have a lot of money to use helping environment and a lot of resources. On the other hand, the less develop countries have the problem of poverty with bad economic growth. In addition, the less develop countries do not save their environment because they have not enough money to help environment and lack of resources.
For situation of the less develop countries, we have to think about how to helping the environment, while the problem of poverty. I think that education is best way. For example, people teach about how to plant trees and why to plant trees is important to their children in video. It is good situation that children plant tree for helping the environment. Also if poor country people teach that how to reduce, reuse and recycling, they will save a lot of resources of environment. Therefore, they will conquest the problem of poverty and they will have a little more growth of economic.

Wolf Controversy

The USFWS and in Minnesota provide that wolves are Endangered Species in 1970. Now wolves were excluded Endangered Species by The USFWS. Therefore they have to think that how to control of wolves. In the situation, Native American and environmentalists want to protect wolves because wolves have religious meaning and to Native American and environmentalists worried about food chain and ecology-system. On the other hand, ‘non-native American’ wants to kill many wolves because wolves are unhelpful for farm. In these reason, making decision is difficult.
I strongly agree that environmentalists opinions. If people kill a lot of wolves, many animals, wolves eat animals, will live in Earth. Therefore, food chain will destroy.
Also, wolves has life that is important things. Therefore, we have not to treat as one pleases.
In conclusion, we have to think about other ways except for kill wolves because they have important effort in environment such as food chain. In addition, they are important organisms.

Sea Turtles in Florida-Research Paper Proposal

When I was a teenager, I had an attachment to sea turtles more than any other kinds of animals after I saw a documentary about sea turtles on TV. Then, I choose this topic about sea turtles in writing class and I read several articles about it. Today, eight species of sea turtles are endangered. Above all, the loggerhead sea turtle, the leatherback sea turtle, and the green sea turtle nest on the beach from April to September every year. The loggerhead one is the most sea turtle using the part of place for nesting in Florida. According to the Broward website, sea turtles are protected through Florida Statues by the United States Endangered Species Act of 1973. Also, these laws state that: “No person may take, harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, trap, capture or attempt to engage in any such conduct to marine turtles, turtle nests, and/or turtle eggs.” And, it describes that “if any person violates any provision, they will take civil penalties up to $25,000 or criminal penalties up to $50,000 and up to one year imprisonment.” According to Seabrook (2004), the decreases of sea turtles’ numbers happened in Florida. In fact, John E. Burris said, “A natural cause of decreasing of the sea turtle is predation, parasitism, diseases, and environmental changes etc.” (P.13). There are, however, also other problems such as the quality of the water, tide embankment, ‘other man-made structures’, fishermen killing them carelessly, and people stealing their eggs from their nests (Bayles, 2004). Today, turtles are in danger of extinction, and the government, biologists and the public have several ways to help.
The government, biologists, and the public try to think how they can help sea turtles in Florida because Florida is an important place to live for sea turtles. First, the government has to make advertisements for cognition of important of sea turtles to people. Second, biologists have to search the cause that is decrease of sea turtles and they try to find a solution. Finally, the public tries to use a lot of seas clean and they try to make a sheltered housing for good environment to sea turtles. Also, if the turtles become extinct, it will affect the ecosystem badly. Therefore, if the ecosystem is destroyed, people will have lots of troubles from this.
I have found a book and a variety of articles that give background information about sea turtles in Florida. And then, I learn about sea turtle nesting behavior, population of sea turtles, and life history of sea turtles. I still want to find an article about how turtles can overcome from the extinction.

Sea Turtles in Florida-Preliminary Out line

Thesis: Today, turtles are in danger of extinction and the government, biologists and the public have several ways to help.

I. Loggerhead sea turtles have been making 1,000 nests since 1989, but Loggerhead sea turtles had only 346 nests in April in 2004 at the Georgia beaches. Also, the decreases of sea turtles’ numbers happened in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Caribbean and Alabama. Biologists predict causes are the quality of sea turtles’ foods, pollution, developing habitat and cool temperatures on the Eastern coast. If people want to have enough loggerhead sea turtles left to avoid extinction, loggerhead sea turtles have to have over 2000 nests for 25 years.
<Response>
To begin with, a lot of creatures are in danger of extinction today. Also, turtles are not exceptional. Therefore, many biologists have to think about that. They need to focus on the research of how turtles can get out of danger of extinction rather than the cause of why the number of turtles is decreasing.
Moreover, the number of turtles is decreasing today. People have to try to increase the number of turtles because decreasing of turtles is caused by the pollution to the environment that human have made. Let’s think about a way to increase the number of turtles. In my opinion, if people supply good quality food to sea turtles that live at the seashore, the number of turtles is going to increase more than before. Moreover, if people make several sanctuaries for turtles in the beaches, the seaside environment will return to the original state. And then the number of turtles is going to increase.
In conclusion, we should try to maintain the number of turtles while thinking about the causes for the decreasing of the number of turtles, because if the turtles are extinct, the balance of the ecosystem will be broken down and then people would have bad effects from this.

Hurricanes Cap off Bad Year for Turtles

In the article, “Hurricanes Cap off Bad Year for Turtles,” from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, the author mentions that half of ‘sea turtle nests’ were destroyed by summer hurricanes in Florida in 2004. Moreover, the author says that the number of turtle’s nests is decreasing between 36 percent and 38 percent in the country every year, and also this happening in Florida. According to Mote Marine Laboratory sea turtle research in Florida, a cause of the decreasing of the sea turtle was the weather in 2004. However, there are also other problems such as the quality of the water, tide embankments, ‘other man-made structures’, fishermen killing them carelessly, and people stealing their eggs from their nests.
To begin with, now a lot of species are placed in a crisis of extermination because of environment problems. This study says that the number of turtles is decreasing every year because the temperature of the water is getting warmer and people eat the eggs of turtle, the construction of building near sea and the carelessness of people.
The decline of turtles is the main cause of environmental problems and human. For example, when people are at the beach, they throw away a lot of trash. Also, people construct buildings in the sea. These reason do not have home for turtle. In addition, people eat turtles. On the other hand, Hurricanes are not the main reason. Because hurricanes are always happen annually. Therefore, we should think about the way to preserve turtles, so as not to make them to become extinct.
Consequently, if the turtles become extinct, it will affect the ecosystem. Therefore, if the ecosystem is destroyed, people will have some troubles from it. In my opinion, we need to try to preserve the ecosystem before we get troubles.

Mediocrity Rules

In the article,” Mediocrity Rules,” from the Mcspotlight website, the author maintains that you try to be average. The author compares two kind of people who opposite scale of intelligence. The author say that these people, who got IQ score under 70 or over 140, are not good in society. Because low intelligence people are sometimes harmful to society. On the other hand, high intelligence people overly concentrate own field. Therefore, high intelligence people weak a side of society. Furthermore, the author says that present people work a lot of time because of inventions of bright people. I disagree with author’s opinion that endeavor to be mediocrity because it is a shorter way of vain life.
To begin with, it is not good thing that endeavor to be average. Most of people are usually thinking about something while they live. But if we want to average, we will have to cease getting good ideas. Therefore, search of mediocrity means vain life.
Moreover, most of people can have good ideas in own superior field. Nevertheless, if we do not use good ideas in important situation to try average, you will lose something such as time or position in your life. Also, it is futile behaviors that we do not use useful inventions because useful inventions save our time. Therefore, we will not try to be mediocrity.
Consequently, It is good thing for people to keep thinking to have good ideas and to use useful inventions. I think that people try to have good ideas and bright people try to invent more useful things for our comfortable life and good society. Therefore, we do not have to try average.

Deer Damage-Summary Response

In the article, “Deer Damage : Numbers Climb, Threat Escalates,” from the ILFB website, the author states the population of whitetail deer has risen in Illinois since 30 years ago because of the supplies of good food and warm winters. An increase in population of deer leads to a lot of ‘deer-vehicle accidents’ and spread of disease which could kill the herd of deer. Also, the diseases that come into being because of the overpopulation of deer can threaten human health. In addition, crop damage becomes larger because of the surplus population of wildlife. According to Erickson, The Illinois Department of Natural Resources gives “a nuisance permit to a landowner, allowing the taking of up to 10 deer out of season, as long as it can be proven that there is crop damage”; however, it is “not working as it should”. In addition, “Illinois has no compensation program”.
To begin with, the overpopulation of a specific living thing affects the ecology and human life badly. Studies have shown that the state suffers damage from the overpopulation of deer in Illinois. I think that The Illinois Department of Natural Resources should try to think of the way of decrease the number of deer, for example, by having a day of deer hunting that has restriction to catch a number of deer for each person. Also, The Illinois Department of Natural Resources should think about the compensation program for the farmer who has crop damage because of wildlife. Moreover, the problem of deer population is not only Illinois’ problem. Therefore the government should think about the solution of the overpopulation of deer for the ecology and our life.
http://www.ilfb.org/viewdocument.asp?did=8683&r=0.3996698&r=0.9534113&r=0.6312372

By Ri-Na Park

American Sweethearts-my favorite movie

The story is about two movie stars: the guy, played by John Cusack, is desperately in love with the girl, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones. A lack of these factors leads to poor country. Proponents think that rich country should help poor country because all men are created equal. Opponents, however, say we don’t need to help poor country because people of poor country are not able to stand up for themselves. I think that wealthy nations have to help poor nations. I think that wealthy nations have to help poor nations because every human being is equal, we need to protect the economy, and poor countries' governments need help.
First, wealthy countries should help poor countries because every human being is given same right to live. Let’s have a simple evidence of that. While wealthy children eat, sleep and wear clothes very well, if poor children suffer from any of those, it is not fair to every child. In addition, according to Clinton, as described by Associated Press, “The people in Africa are no different from the people in America.” Therefore, we do not discriminate against people. For instance, most rich countries' people believe in Christianity and receive the Bible's instruction. The Bible has two things that we should help the poor and if you learn something and then you have to practice. In this situation, wealthy countries have to help poor countries.
Second, unless wealthy countries help poor countries, economy of world will face terrible situation. Poor countries, India and African nations, conclude many percentage of population in the world. Right now, wealthy countries can get high productivity by huge income and outcome. But, if the rich countries want to get benefit of economy in the future, they need to take care of people who will be enormous consumers in the future. Also, poor countries' economics influence rich countries because rich countries export stuffs to poor countries. If poor country has terrible situation, many rich countries can not export many other poor countries their stuffs. In this case, rich countries have to help poor countries because of currently economic effect. And unless wealthy countries help poor countries, poor countries will pollute their environments. Actually, now poor countries destroy their environment because of their several problems what they face. Environmental problems can affect other countries which include rich countries that should solve the problems in the future.
Third, governments of most poor countries do not have strong power or good experience. For this reason, the governments seriously need wealthy countries’ help. If they help, poor countries get many solutions of problems that they are facing because many countries have stepped similar stages and wealthy countries already have many experiences that solved many problems. According to Iran, “Developing countries should work together to help the poor and the disadvantaged in the new digital and knowledge-centric world, Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said on Tuesday.” In other words, wealthy and poor countries have to help and work together. It means if poor countries are in trouble, wealthy countries must help for every country's union. In addition, after poor countries are helped by wealthy countries, poor countries will help wealthy countries in the future, when wealthy countries face serious problems that they can not solve alone.
In conclusion, before poor countries ask for help from wealthy countries, the wealthy countries have to help in many ways. As a distance that people feel between countries has become narrow, every person in the world should help each other. We have to consider all of country.

Reference:
Irna (2001, July 25) "Rich countries should help poor nations in digital era." Global Policy Forum. The author states that David Wechsler’s general intelligence tests were first published in 1939. The test has low dependence on verbal ability. The author considers three revised tests. The WAIS for adults, the WISC-R for 6~17 year olds and WPPSI for 4~6half year olds are designed with small differences. The WAIS-R is type of test or expertness being examined and has three scores of verbal, performance and total that is general intellectual ability. The author concludes that the WAIS-R is arranged by difficulty and requires ninety minutes. I think that intelligence scores have stereotypes and are changeable.
I think that intelligence test is not good because intelligence scores have stereotypes. For example, when I was young, my first score of intelligence was very low score because I answered in a half-hearted way. After I took the test, teacher always asked easy question instead of difficult question to me in those days because of test’s result. On the other hand, when I took second test, I got a better score than the first test because I cared about test. Then teacher’s behavior changed. Teacher asked more difficult questions than easy questions.
Secondly, test scores are changeable. For example, if he is in terrible condition, then he will not play well. Therefore, he had a worse score than other day. On the other hand, if he feels great, he had better score than when he didn’t have good condition. As a result, he didn’t know his concrete ability. Consequently, the Wechsler intelligence test scores are changeable by a takers’ condition.
In conclusion, I am interested in article because when I was young, I took the intelligence tests. The Wechsler intelligence tests have advantage of being a test for separate ages in each test. But the test is prejudiced against students because of intelligence test scores we do not believe test scores because the scores are affected by your condition.

Laborious Ants and A Lazy Grasshopper
Once upon a time, good ants and a lazy grasshopper lived in carbondale. One reaction to a dangerous situation could be panic. In “The Influence of Culture”, Kristine Brown and Susan Hood from Academic Encounters: “Life in Society” say that : panic is bad group behavior and panic could appear in a dangerous situation. I think about panic is mental horror and people feel panic in a situation of danger and threat.
Panic passes through several steps. First, the people have to believe in serious danger. Second, they have to a powerful fear of danger. Third, the crowd must to have a general trend to panic. Next, the people must increase fear with their words and actions. Finally, there has to be less cooperation with each other. Also, occasionally panic appears mass hysteria where people become out of control without checking. So, when we find a dangerous situation we have to check the danger of real.
In conclusion, panic is that we are afraid of something we can’t see. For example, I went to ghost house in Lotte-World, before a year. When I walked a dark walkway in a ghost house, someone yell. So, I feel fear because I could not see who was there.

How Do We Learn About Gender Roles?

Society is groups of human beings. In “Bring Up Boys And Girls”, Kristine Brown and Susan Hood from Academic Encounters: “Life in Society” say that : male or females learn about how to behave and think in society from parents, school, peer group, and society. I agree strongly with author’s opinion because I have experienced such same steps.
First of all, parents taught about being a boy and girl. For example, most babies are worn blue or pink clothes as their sex by their parents: boys wear blue clothes and girls wear pink clothes without babies’ choice. In addition, parents want their daughters to learn piano and ballet without their talents. On the other hand, they want their sons to learn soccer and Tae-kwon-do that is a Korean system of fighting without weapons.
The second, male and female learn behavior of each gender that their environments expect and want. For example, when children make noisy in the class, women teachers usually say “could you be quiet in class?” But men teachers say tougher than women teachers. Also, we often imitate peer group act. For example, when I am teenager, I saw action that a teen-age girl spit. And then, both my friend and me practice this action.
The third, we are socialized by society. For instance, a lot of girl learn fairy-tale about beautiful is good and quiet is good. And I also learned that. So, I care about good looks and I try to gentle person. Moreover, we learned media of magazine. For example, when I saw fashion model in magazine, I think that they clothes are beautiful and gorgeous.
And then, I am interesting the fashion fields better than car fields and exercise fields.
In conclusion, we are learned about gender role by socializing agents. Just at that time, the magician appeared there, and said, “Why are you crying?”
The woodman said, “I dropped my iron ax in the lake”, and then the magician disappeared into the lake.

Afterwards he appeared standing on the lake with a silver ax and he asked, “Is this yours?”
The woodman answered, “It’s not mine”, so the magician again went into the lake and then appeared in front of the woodman with a gold ax. But this gold ax was not his, so the magician went into the lake and appeared with his ax. Only then the man said, “It’s mine”.
The magician said, “You didn’t lie so I’ll give you all three axes, your ax and the gold and silver axes. Afterwards, the man sold his axes for a lot of money; so then he became a rich person.

Another woodman heard this story. So this woodman went there and intentionally dropped his iron ax and then he pretended to cry, so the magician also appeared in front of his eyes, and he asked, “Why are you crying?”
He answered, “I lost my ax.” The magician went into the lake after the conversation and appeared with a gold ax.
He asked, “Is this yours?”

He answered, “Yes”, so the magician disappeared at once. The man had nothing, not even his ax.
RiNa

The Little Pear Girl

"The Little Pear Girl" is a non-traditional tale that present a very harmful stereotype for a lot of people. The story about the poor always gave four basketfuls to ruler every year but one year harvest was not good so the poor gave four baskets that daughter stole in daughter to ruler because the poor feared punishment. Fortunately, the king's servants didn't discover Violetta and carry baskets. One day, the cook discovered her in pantry and then Violetta lived in castle. when she was watering the flower in the royal gardens, she met king's son, and the two became friends. The other maids jealous of Violetta's beauty and of the affection many people in the castle so they made nasty rumours about her. So king listened to rumours one day and then the king said severely to her "I'm told you boast of being able to steal the witches' treasure trove. Is that true?" Violetta said "no." But king didn't believe the fact so the king drove her out of kingdom. "you may return only when you have laid hands on the treasure," he said. And then she stole witches' treasure in witches' palace by old woman's help. And Violetta gave witches' treasure to the king. So the king gave prize that accept to get married king's son and they began happy life.

Violetta is non-traditional type because she start on a journey to get witches' treasure. So we think that she is brave. And Violetta, the king and the poor are a very bad stereotypes first, she stole witches' treasure. Second, the king doesn't believe Violetta. Third, the poor doesn't honest. Some might argue that it would be good thing for a young girl to steal someone. And a lot of children do not believe people In addition, they think that the poor doesn't honest. I feel the story that contains bad element for children and shows the result of important than the process of important.

By Rina

Hello~ Welcome

Welcome~
