Air pollution in Illinois
I would like to summarize the two articles and make a connection between them. My topic is air pollution in Illinois. The first article is Ryan Keith’s “Illinois Third in Nation for Neighborhood with Unhealthy Air” from the Associated Press State & Local Wire. The second one is that Ill Kevin Leahy’s “Environment should be Everyone’s Concern” from Northern Illinois University. The first article points out Illinois’ unhealthy air quality by ranking. And the author describes the air quality by a nurse’s nursing experiences of taking care of patients with respiratory problems and itchy eyes problems on campus in Illinois. Also, the first article is concerned about the Illinois’ highest risk neighborhoods with low air quality. The second one is talking about the effects of air pollution in Illinois by presenting statistics. And the author is emphasizing that factories are main problems of air pollution in Illinois, and the factories need to change their systems for new air quality standards. Therefore, I would like to talk about the seriousness and the effects of air pollution in Illinois.
My research questions are presented as follows: how serious Illinois’s air pollution is? what are the causes of air pollution in Illinois? what do we have to do for improve air quality from the cause of air pollution in Illinois? Let’s look at my summaries for understanding and finding details about air pollution in Illinois.
In my first article I summarize, “Illinois Third in Nation for Neighborhood with Unhealthy Air,” Ryan Keith, states that Illinois has the third unhealthiest air after Pennsylvania and Ohio in the United States because the Illinois’ health risk score face with long term air pollution by industrial factories. For example, According to Hinton, she is a nurse at William Harris Elementary, stating that 15% - 20% of students have asthma or allergy problems, and she believes that it happens because of nearby factories. In addition, the author shows that five Illinois neighborhoods belong to thirty riskiest nations. The author found interesting thing that both minorities and the poor population are high in Illinois’ neighbor hood. Today, Illinois still has high number compared to other states at the measure of air pollution. But Illinois’ air quality is getting better than before because of the strict rules such as leaf burning ban and shut down mills which against rules.
I am interested in this article because it explains about the Illinois’ air condition which is third unhealthiest air. And I was surprised when I read the fact that the 15% to 20% students of the William Harris Elementary school have asthma or allergy because the school is located nearby mills. Also, I think that we should set limits of the distance from the factories to the school. In the result, it is good article for understanding the long term view of Illinois air quality.
In the second article entitled, “Environment should be Everyone’s Concern,” Kevin Leahy introduces that air pollution is serious problem in Illinois. Because the air quality leads asthma, heart attack, lung cancer, short breathing, coughing, wheezing, and so on. Moreover, 1,700 Illinoisans died every year due to air pollution from Illinois’ mills. In past four year, the environmental priorities are missed. Because Bush administration did not emphasis on environmental protection, and they roll back some regulations which can protect our air. The study claims that it is a good time to execute a law called New Source Review which is technology to modernize control pollutants, even though the technology is expensive and needs a long time to develop. In addition, he says that we should not think about using power plants, which create pollutants, for our immediate profit for daily life.
The second article helps to understand the air quality in past four years. If I do not read this article, I might not get information about the Bush administration which affects air quality rules badly in past four years. Also, the article gives the information of diseases from air pollution. And this article urges the importance of air quality. So, I can emphasize the importance of the air quality in my town which is Illinois.
According to articles, the authors have a different view between the first article and the second article. In the first article, the author focuses on long term air quality. For example, he talks that Illinois has unhealthy air quality. But the air quality of Illinois is getting better while we start strict rules for 30 years. On the other hand, the second article focuses on short term air quality. For instance, Leahy only mentions that it was in a bad situation for air quality in past four year. Therefore, I learned that each articles has different views based on this issue. Also, in these articles, the statistics help me recognize some serious air quality problem in Illinois. As I mentioned previously, the number, 1,700 of people died every year in Illinois because of impact of air pollution. Both two articles show me their backgrounds, information, and importance of air quality protection.
In conclusion, I summarized two articles that are related to my research questions which are how serious Illinois’s air pollution is? what are the causes of air pollution in Illinois? and what do we have to do for improve air quality from the cause of air pollution in Illinois? Two articles are related each other on the base of the effect of air pollution in Illinois. Especially, we are able to notice that we have to do everything possible to protect the air quality in Illinois. We should avoid the problems get worse in order to improve air quality in Illinois.
